The set celebrates 100 years of powered flight. The stamps feature the Wright Flyer (Kitty Hawk) airplane, flown by Orville Wright, officially the first powered flight on 17th December 1903, recognized by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale as "the first sustained and controlled heavier-than-air powered flight"; Charles Lindbergh and 'The Spirit of St Louis' in the first Transatlantic flight on May 21st 1927; the Beoing 314 (Clipper) with the first transatlantic mail service on May 20th 1939; the Saunders Roe SARO-21 Windhover Amphibian on the first scheduled service from Gibraltar to Tangiers on September 1931; the British Airways Concorde, the first supersonic passenger airplane from January 1976 and NASA's Space Shuttle Columbia, the first space shuttle to fly into Earth orbit in April 1981.
